The Sherilyn Gordon Memorial Travel Award was established in 2017 to provide travel assistance to medical students, general surgery residents, and advanced transplant providers for attendance at the Annual State of the Art Winter Symposium. The award was created in memory of ASTS member and transplant surgeon, Dr. Sherilyn Gordon, who was a mentor to and advocate for many trainees during her time at The Methodist Hospital of Houston, Texas. The award honors her dedication to transplantation, commitment to transplant patients, and passion for education.  One award will be given annually to a medical student, a general surgery resident and an advanced transplant provider.

Award amount:  Award recipients receive a $1,500 honorarium, hotel accommodations for three nights (room and tax only), and all-access registration to the Winter Symposium.

Eligibility:

  • Medical students: ASTS membership is not required, but encouraged
  • General surgery residents: ASTS membership is required
  • Advanced transplant providers: An Advanced Transplant Provider is defined as a professional who practices in the field of transplant surgery as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. ASTS membership is required. 

Submission Requirements:

Medical Students (1 award annually)

  • Individuals interested in applying must provide a brief summary of their interests and future plans in transplantation, why they want to attend the Winter Symposium, and how the award will assist in fulfilling their professional aspirations.
  • Letter of support from an ASTS member.

General Surgery Residents (1 award annually)

  • The resident must have an established relationship with an ASTS member.
  • Individuals interested in applying must provide a brief summary of their interests and future plans in transplantation, why they want to attend the Winter Symposium, and how the award will assist in fulfilling their professional aspirations.
  • Letter of support from an ASTS member.

Advanced Transplant Provider (1 award annually)

  • Individuals interested in applying must provide a brief summary of their current practice, why they want to attend the Winter Symposium, and how the award will assist in their professional development.
  • Letter of support from an ASTS member.

Review criteria

Applications will be scored based on but not limited the following criteria:

  • Experience: applicants must provide evidence that the past experience and ongoing relationship with transplant through research, clinical activities, and advocacy.
  • Goals: applicants must provide defined goals for a career in transplantation.
  • Interests: applicants must provide details of past academic interests and any activities related to such interests. Application must include several examples of self-direction with tangible results.
  • Letter of Support: letters must demonstrate that the writer has a relationship with the applicant, why they highly recommend them for the award, and should include examples of the applicant’s transplant interests, motivations, and professional goals.
  • Overall Score: The overall score should serve as a composite score of the overall application and not an average of the individual scores.
